Clear Aligners Q&A

What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are braces alternatives that straighten teeth with transparent plastic trays rather than brackets and wires. Unlike braces, clear aligners are translucent, removable, and molded to the shape and size of your teeth so others won’t be able to tell when you’re wearing them. These orthodontic systems are popular among teens and adults alike.

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligners correct orthodontic issues in the same way as braces. Since these durable plastic materials mold to the shape of your teeth, clear aligners shift them into alignment through gradual force.

Each set of aligners target different teeth to pull them into a more desirable position. In most cases, you transition to a new set of clear aligners once every two weeks.

For clear aligners to work effectively, you must wear them for at least 20-22 hours a day. You should remove the aligners to eat, drink, brush, and floss. However, removing them for extended periods can impact your results and extend your treatment plan. With the right care, clear aligners can improve the appearance and function of your teeth in just 6-18 months.

What are the benefits of clear aligners?

Many people favor clear aligners over traditional braces due to advantages such as:

  • Enhanced appearance
  • Improved oral hygiene
  • Superior comfort
  • Shorter treatment time
  • Removable

While braces are sometimes necessary to treat complex orthodontic issues, clear aligners are effective at improving many common concerns, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, and gapped teeth.

What are the types of clear aligners?

Schwartz Orthodontics offers both Invisalign and Spark clear aligners. Each system has its own advantages and disadvantages that Dr. Schwartz will explain at your initial consultation.

Both systems use digital impressions to create custom aligners with flexible plastic materials. While Invisalign uses durable SmartTrack™ BPA-free plastic to shift teeth into alignment, Spark’s TruGEN™ materials are thinner and more stain-resistant. Some people find Spark aligners to be more comfortable.

Dr. Schwartz always performs a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation before recommending the right system of clear aligners for you.
